LONDON – Millwall’s goalkeeper Liam Roberts is potentially facing an extended suspension due to a dangerous challenge during the FA Cup fifth-round match against Crystal Palace, which resulted in severe injuries for forward Jean-Philippe Mateta. The Football Association has expressed its intention to increase Roberts’ punishment beyond the standard three-match ban for serious foul play, deeming it “clearly insufficient.” Roberts has been given until Thursday to respond to these charges.

The incident occurred just eight minutes into the game. Roberts exited the penalty area in an attempt to clear the ball and unintentionally struck Mateta in the face with a high follow-through from his left foot. This unfortunate contact left Mateta requiring substantial medical attention.

Mateta’s injuries were serious, necessitating him to be stretchered off the pitch. He was fitted with a neck brace and transported to the hospital, where he received “specialist treatment and 25 stitches for a deep laceration to his left ear,” as stated by Crystal Palace.

Despite this setback, Crystal Palace managed to secure a victory, defeating Millwall 3-1 and advancing to the FA Cup quarterfinals. Mateta, who has been Palace’s leading scorer this season, remains optimistic about his recovery and expressed his hope to return to action “very soon.”
