The Seattle Seahawks made a strategic move on Tuesday by releasing outside linebacker Dre’Mont Jones along with three other seasoned players to free up salary cap space as they gear up for the beginning of free agency next week.
Dre’Mont Jones, who is 28-years-old, recorded 9.5 sacks over the course of two seasons with the Seahawks. He had initially joined the team on a notable three-year, $51 million contract in 2023. By parting ways with Jones, the Seahawks have managed to clear over $11 million from their salary cap, gaining some financial flexibility. Despite posting a respectable 10-7 record, the team fell short of making the playoffs last season.
Additionally, the Seahawks announced the release of safety Rayshawn Jenkins, defensive tackle Roy Robertson-Harris, and offensive lineman George Fant. Fant’s contribution was curtailed last season as he was limited to just two games in 2024 due to injury. The combined actions of releasing these players have unlocked over $27 million in cap space for the team.
These roster decisions could signal the beginning of a series of changes for the Seahawks as they prepare for the new league year. The team aims to focus on retaining several key players who have been central to their efforts, including linebacker Ernest Jones, who became part of the Seahawks’ lineup following a trade with Tennessee in October.
