Portland State edges out Sacramento State for 3rd in Big Sky

    PORTLAND, Ore. — Isaiah Johnson propelled Portland State to a narrow 59-56 victory over Sacramento State in their final game of the Big Sky Conference regular season on Monday night.

    With this win, Portland State, boasting a record of 19-12 overall and 11-7 in the conference, secured the third spot in the standings. As a result, they earned a bye and will next face No. 6 seed Idaho in the quarterfinals on March 10 in Boise, Idaho. Meanwhile, Sacramento State, concluding the season at 7-24 and 3-15 in conference play, found themselves at the bottom of the standings. They are set to compete against No. 9 seed Weber State in a first-round clash on Saturday. The team that emerges victorious will go on to challenge the top seed, Northern Colorado, in the quarterfinals on Sunday.

    Isaiah Johnson was instrumental for the Vikings, scoring 21 points, and supplementing his performance with nine rebounds and three steals. Qiant Myers also contributed significantly with 13 points and seven assists. Tre-Vaughn Minott chipped in with nine points to bolster the team’s efforts.

    For the Sacramento State Hornets, Emil Skytta emerged as the top performer with 12 points and eight rebounds. Additionally, Mike Wilson added 10 points, while Jacob Holt contributed nine points and gathered six rebounds.
