DALLAS—The Dallas Mavericks have bolstered their roster by signing Kai Jones to a two-way contract, a move aimed at addressing the team’s injury-laden frontcourt. The Mavericks are currently contending with injuries to several key big men.

Standing at 6-foot-11, Jones was originally drafted in the first round by New York in the 2021 NBA Draft. Earlier this season, he made appearances in 28 games with the Los Angeles Clippers, having spent substantial time with their G League affiliate. During his stint with the Clippers, Jones averaged 2.2 points and 1.6 rebounds per game. Recently, he was waived by the team.

As the Mavericks find themselves positioned 10th in the Western Conference standings, they are working around the absence of significant players, including Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford, Dereck Lively II, and P.J. Washington Jr., all of whom are currently sidelined due to injuries.

Prior to Jones’ signing, Dallas had added Moses Brown on a 10-day contract. Brown managed to secure two starts and made four appearances during his short-term tenure with the team. However, constraints imposed by salary cap regulations rendered the Mavericks unable to offer him a prolonged contract after his initial deal came to an end Sunday.

To accommodate the addition of Jones on a two-way agreement, Dallas waived Kylor Kelley from their roster, ensuring compliance with league rules regarding contract signings.
