In a strategic shift for the upcoming baseball season, the Houston Astros plan to position star player Jose Altuve primarily in left field, a move confirmed by manager Joe Espada on Monday. This decision, as reported to the Houston Chronicle, marks a significant change for Altuve, an experienced player predominantly known for his role at second base over an illustrious career.

Jose Altuve’s impressive track record includes being a nine-time All-Star, a three-time batting champion, and the American League MVP in 2017. His history at second base is formidable, having participated in nearly all of his 1,767 major league games at that position. In 2015, he secured the Gold Glove award and in 2020, led the AL with the fewest errors in the position, totaling only four.

Joe Espada outlined the plan, stating, “Right now the plan is for him to play the majority of his games in left field,” underlining his intent to maintain consistency in Altuve’s role rather than alternating his position throughout the season.

The concept of relocating Altuve to left field originated during discussions about retaining third baseman Alex Bregman. Had Bregman continued with the Astros, newly acquired Isaac Paredes might have assumed second base duties, prompting Altuve’s move to the outfield. Demonstrating his team spirit, Altuve expressed his willingness to adapt, saying, “Whatever I have to do for him to stay, I’m willing to do it,” accentuating his commitment to team dynamics.

Even with Bregman ultimately signing with Boston, the Astros concluded that shifting Altuve to the outfield remains a strategic decision for the team’s overall composition and success in the upcoming season.
