On the final day of Milan Fashion Week, the audience was treated to a whimsical and joyful display by emerging designer Susan Fang, whose collection was showcased under a stunning arch of iridescent flowers. Fang’s latest creations garnered support from the iconic fashion house Dolce & Gabbana.
Drawing inspiration from her mother’s cherished memories of growing up in the Chinese countryside, Fang integrated rural motifs derived from her mother’s artistic paintings. “Our aim was to explore the concept of cultural inheritance, whether personal or artistic,” Fang explained behind the scenes, after receiving warm congratulations from fashion legends Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.
The outerwear displayed idyllic landscapes, such as cherry blossoms bursting against a vibrant azure sky or babbling streams flowing against a rich blue backdrop. Dresses crafted from colorful fabric strips layered like a rainbow cake radiated with what Fang described as “a bouncy feeling of happiness.”
Since launching her self-titled label in 2017 after graduating from Central Saint Martins, Fang has placed material experimentation at the heart of her designs. This collection included a standout piece—a sculptural daisy dress composed of beaded florets affixed to a 3-D structure.
Fang’s collaboration with Dolce & Gabbana’s skilled artisans allowed her to experiment with new materials like denim and sequins, all while honing her tailoring skills.
