ACAPULCO, México — Tomas Machac, the eighth seed, achieved his first ATP title Saturday by securing a victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina with a scoreline of 7-6 (6), 6-2 in the Mexican Open. The 24-year-old has etched his name in the history books by becoming just the third Czech player to clinch an ATP 500 tournament since the inception of this category in 2009. This achievement places him alongside compatriots Jiri Lehecka, who triumphed in 2024 in Adelaide and 2025 in Brisbane, and Kiri Vesely, who won titles in 2015 in Auckland and 2020 in Pune.
With this win, Machac has made a significant leap in his professional career by breaking into the top 20 of the men’s rankings for the first time. This milestone marks the first entry into the top 20 by a Czech player since Tomas Berdych in June 2018. Previously, Machac had faced defeat in a final at Geneva against Casper Ruud last year, demonstrating his persistence and determination to reach this victory.
This match was a challenging occasion for Davidovich Fokina, who experienced his second consecutive final loss within a single month. His prior final defeat came at the hands of Miomir Kecmanovic at the Delray Beach tournament in February, further adding tension to the year for the Spanish player. Despite these setbacks, the passion and drive in both players were evident throughout the competition.
