MIAMI — In a thrilling double-overtime matchup, Jacksonville State emerged victorious over Florida International with a score of 84-79 on Saturday, thanks in large part to Jao Ituka’s impressive performance. Ituka, scoring 29 points, was pivotal for the Gamecocks (20-10, 12-5 Conference USA), while Jaron Pierre Jr. bolstered the team with 22 points, and Michael Houge contributed 11.
The game saw intense moments, especially towards the end of the first overtime when Pierre’s layup brought the score level at 73, leaving 20 seconds on the clock. Ituka’s skillful execution continued into the second overtime, where he hit two free throws and a critical 3-pointer, setting the Gamecocks ahead 80-73 with just over three minutes remaining. To seal the victory, Pierre added two more points from free throws, concluding the scoring with only eight seconds to spare.
Jayden Brewer from Florida International made a significant impact, sinking a layup just before the end of regulation time, which set the stage for the overtime periods with a tied score of 64-all. The Gamecocks, at the onset of this game, were in close pursuit of conference leader Liberty, only half a game behind, with Liberty scheduled to host Kennesaw State the following day.
On the Florida International side, Jonathan Aybar delivered a strong performance with 19 points, six rebounds, two steals, and three blocks, while Vianney Salatchoum contributed 18 points and seven rebounds. Brewer ended his performance with 11 points. Despite the loss, the Panthers put forth a commendable effort.
The victory extended Jacksonville State’s success in their recent encounters with Florida International, having won five of their last six meetings. Looking ahead, Florida International is set to visit Western Kentucky on Thursday, while Jacksonville State will conclude its regular season at home against Kennesaw State on Saturday.
