Butler Shines in Drexel’s 71-61 Win over Monmouth

    PHILADELPHIA — In a final regular-season matchup, Yame Butler led Drexel with 20 points to secure a 71-61 victory over Monmouth on Saturday.

    Butler’s performance was highlighted by shooting 4-of-6 from the field, including 2-of-3 from the three-point line, and achieving an impressive 10-of-11 from the free-throw line. Drexel, holding a 17-14 record overall and a 9-9 standing in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA), benefited from contributions by Kobe Magee, who scored 15 points and snagged eight rebounds. Shane Blakeney also added 11 points to the tally, with an efficient shooting of 4-of-5, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.

    For Monmouth, who sits at a 12-19 overall record and a 10-8 in CAA play, Abdi Bashir Jr. played a significant role by netting 15 points and making two steals. Jack Collins contributed with 14 points, while Madison Durr finished with 10 points, five assists, and two steals.

    During the first half, Butler scored 10 points, but Drexel found itself slightly trailing 34-33 at halftime. The game took a turn as Drexel, overcoming a narrow second-half lead, launched an 8-0 run, transforming their advantage into a nine-point cushion at 61-52 with just under six minutes remaining. Butler’s consistent scoring continued as he added another 10 points in the second half.

    As both Drexel and Monmouth gear up for the CAA Tournament, they will enjoy a first-round bye, with the action commencing this coming Friday in Washington.
