BERLIN — Serhou Guirassy continued his scoring streak as Borussia Dortmund achieved their second consecutive victory in the Bundesliga with a 2-0 triumph over St. Pauli on Saturday. This marks the first instance this season where Dortmund has managed back-to-back league wins, albeit their performance left much to be desired. The team looked to bounce back yet again, having recently put an end to a dismal run with an impressive 6-0 thrashing of Union Berlin.
In the first half, Dortmund appeared lackluster, struggling to pose a significant threat. Meanwhile, St. Pauli, who had been goalless in their previous three matches, seemed more likely to open the scoring, creating several opportunities. The breakthrough for Dortmund came after halftime; Guirassy registered his 14th goal of the campaign in the 50th minute. Following a blocked initial attempt by St. Pauli defender David Nemeth, Guirassy capitalized on the opportunity by converting from close range. This came after a failed clearance of a cross by Yan Couto, with Karim Adeyemi recovering the ball and setting up Guirassy.
Adeyemi doubled Dortmund’s lead eight minutes later, netting the second goal during a quick counterattack following a St. Pauli free kick, with Marcel Sabitzer playing a vital role in the defensive clearance that initiated the move.
Despite the win, Dortmund remains in 10th position; however, their prospects for Champions League qualification received a lift following Mainz’s comeback victory over RB Leipzig, winning 2-1 away from home.
The away teams ruled the day in the Bundesliga, as other fixtures saw Wolfsburg secure a 2-1 victory over Werder Bremen, handing the hosts their fifth consecutive defeat across all competitions. Hoffenheim edged past Bochum with a 1-0 win, while Borussia Mönchengladbach cruised to a 3-0 triumph at Heidenheim.
Later in the day, reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen were set to battle it out against third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt away from home.
