TOKYO — Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba traded his trademark suit for a trendier ensemble at the Tokyo Girls Collection, capturing the audience’s attention in an unexpected shift from his usual public persona. This renowned event, set at the National Yoyogi Stadium First Gymnasium, is celebrated as a premier fashion highlight in Japan.
Ishiba surprised attendees by appearing in a double-breasted blazer paired with denim trousers, complemented by white sneakers and chic black-rimmed glasses. His fashionable transformation was met with enthusiastic cheers from the elite gathering and audience members alike.
Promoting his vision of a “cool” Japan, Ishiba articulated his support for a vibrant and “cute, energetic” image for the nation, aiming for these lively occurrences to proliferate throughout Japan and resonate globally.
Joining the prime minister was Myaku-Myaku, the Osaka Expo mascot. This unique red-and-blue mascot symbolizes the union of cell and water, adding a whimsical element to the evening’s proceedings.
Following the show, Ishiba, once again dressed in his formal business attire, spoke to reporters, disclosing that it was his debut appearance before a predominantly young, female audience at such an event. “I was incredibly nervous,” he confessed, grateful for the cheerful support of the mascot, which features a playful tail.
Shigeru Ishiba is thought to have made history as the first Japanese prime minister to participate in the Tokyo Girls Collection as it commemorates its 20th year.
