In Indianapolis, rising star Ashton Jeanty is witnessing a renewed appreciation for running backs just as he ascends in college football. Previously observing a decline in running back value, Jeanty now sees a resurgence, exemplified by free agents Saquon Barkley, Derrick Henry, and Josh Jacobs leading their new teams to success. This shift is timely for Jeanty, as he positions himself among a robust class of running backs at the NFL scouting combine, with potential to be a top-15 draft pick.
“There was a period when the position’s value dipped,” Jeanty explained. “But now, teams are recognizing the impact a special running back can have on enhancing an offense.” He added that a strong running back can transform a team into a serious playoff contender, although recent trends have focused on limiting investment in the position.
The recent trend saw only a few backs drafted in the first round since 2020. Additionally, teams like the New York Giants, Tennessee Titans, and Las Vegas Raiders did not prioritize retaining their top rushers, resulting in high draft picks. Meanwhile, Barkley broke records with the Philadelphia Eagles, as Henry and Jacobs guided their new teams back to the playoffs.
Jeanty hopes these outcomes will positively impact running back valuations, especially after his nearly record-breaking season rushing for 2,601 yards. He lost the Heisman Trophy in a narrow contest, showcasing his talent and promise. “There’s demand for running backs, and teams will draft when they see fit,” Jeanty expressed.
This year’s draft class features a versatile group of running backs with varied skills. Jeanty, having amassed nearly 2,000 yards after contact at Boise State, is among the notable names. In Arizona, Cam Skattebo led his team to the playoffs, while asserting his physical play style. Sampson and Henderson also boast impressive stats, with Sampson setting a record at Tennessee and Henderson, along with Judkins, propelling Ohio State to a national title.
Henderson commented on his dual talents, focusing on his speed and pass protection, aiming to impress in upcoming workouts. Jeanty also believes he has more to offer as a receiver, anticipating NFL interest despite uncertainties about his draft position. He argues the recent season proves the growing value of running backs, enticing teams willing to seize the opportunity.
“The timing is perfect; running backs are in high demand again,” Jeanty said. He acknowledged the exceptional performances of NFL players like Barkley and emphasized the high level of talent in his draft class.
