AKRON, Ohio — Akron secured a significant victory on Friday, defeating Kent State 77-72 to claim the Mid-American Conference regular-season title with two games to play. Tavari Johnson led the charge with 16 points, going 7 of 13 from the field, including 2 for 5 from beyond the arc.
The Zips, now boasting a 23-6 overall record and 15-1 in the conference, also saw a strong performance from Nate Johnson, who contributed 14 points and secured 10 rebounds. Shammah Scott chipped in with nine points, shooting 3 for 8 from the field and converting 3 of 4 free throws.
On the opposing side, the Kent State Golden Flashes, standing at 19-10 overall and 9-7 in conference play, were propelled by Jalen Sullinger’s 19 points. Marquis Barnett added 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Delrecco Gillespie concluded the game with 10 points and eight rebounds.
During the first half, Bowen Hardman contributed six points, though Akron trailed by seven at halftime with a score of 39-32. However, in the second half, Tavari Johnson’s leadership shone as he scored 10 points, helping Akron outpace Kent State by 12 points in the final 20 minutes.
Looking ahead, both teams are set to compete again on Tuesday, with Akron traveling to face Toledo, while Kent State will visit Western Michigan.
