Akron Secures MAC Title with 77-72 Win Over Kent State

    AKRON, Ohio — Tavari Johnson played a pivotal role in leading Akron to a 77-72 victory over Kent State on Friday, securing the Mid-American Conference regular season title with two games still left on their schedule.

    Johnson excelled on the court for the Zips (23-6, 15-1), scoring 16 points while achieving a shooting performance of 7 out of 13 from the field, including 2 for 5 from beyond the arc. Nate Johnson contributed significantly as well with 14 points and an impressive 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, Shammah Scott added nine points to the team’s tally, shooting 3 for 8 from the field and hitting 3 of 4 free throws.

    On the opposing side, the Golden Flashes (19-10, 9-7) were driven by Jalen Sullinger, who ended the match with a top score of 19 points. Marquis Barnett supported the team’s effort with 14 points and seven rebounds, and Delrecco Gillespie also made his presence known by scoring 10 points and pulling down eight rebounds.

    During the first half, Bowen Hardman contributed six points, yet Akron found themselves trailing 39-32 at halftime. In response, Tavari Johnson ignited the second half with 10 points, helping Akron outmaneuver Kent State by a 12-point margin in the concluding half of the game.

    Looking ahead, both teams are scheduled to compete again on Tuesday, with Akron set to visit Toledo and Kent State traveling to take on Western Michigan.
