Arizona Diamondbacks’ versatile player Blaze Alexander is set to be sidelined for several weeks due to a strained right oblique, which raises concerns about his availability for opening day.

Diamondbacks’ manager Torey Lovullo shared with reporters on Friday that Alexander’s recovery would take a matter of “weeks, not days,” indicating a significant absence from the team’s activities.

The 25-year-old Alexander came to spring training with hopes of securing a backup position. Last season, he posted a batting average of .247, adding three home runs and 21 RBIs in 61 games. He started the previous year by making the team out of spring training but spent the season moving between the Diamondbacks and their Triple-A affiliate in Reno.
