PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — José Ureña, a right-handed pitcher, has officially signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets. This agreement comes at a crucial time for the Mets, who are dealing with injuries to their pitching staff, including right-hander Frankie Montas with a strained lat muscle and left-hander Sean Manaea who has strained his right oblique.
Ureña, 33, demonstrated his skills last year while playing for the Texas Rangers. In his previous season, he achieved a 5-8 record with a 3.80 ERA over a combination of nine starts and 24 relief appearances. During these games, he accumulated 70 strikeouts and issued 39 walks over 109 innings pitched. As a starter, he faced some challenges, ending with a 2-6 record and a 5.08 ERA.
Over the span of his 10-season major league career, Ureña has been part of several teams. His career ledger includes a 44-77 record with a 4.76 ERA. Throughout his time in the majors, he has worn the jerseys of Miami, Detroit, Milwaukee, Colorado, and more recently, the Chicago White Sox and the Texas Rangers.
With his addition, the Mets aim to bolster their pitching depth, particularly in light of their current injury troubles.
