TAMPA, Fla. — New York Yankees pitcher Luis Gil is set to undergo an MRI after experiencing tightness in his shoulder during a bullpen session on Friday. This development was shared by Yankees manager Aaron Boone in a conversation with New York media outlets.

In addition to Gil’s situation, Boone also provided an update on pitcher JT Brubaker. Brubaker recently suffered three broken ribs after being hit by a line drive off the bat of Tampa Bay’s Kameron Misner during a game on February 21.

Gil, who is 26 years old, had to cut his bullpen session short due to the discomfort. In the previous season, he recorded a 15-7 win-loss record and maintained a 3.50 ERA across 29 starts. Over that span, he struck out 171 batters and issued a league-high 77 walks in 151 2/3 innings pitched.

Boone expressed concern about Gil’s condition, suggesting that it may lead to some downtime. Gil is considered a key component of the Yankees’ starting rotation, which also features Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, and Clarke Schmidt. Should an opportunity arise, Marcus Stroman could fill in as a starter.

As for Brubaker, the 31-year-old pitcher has faced injuries over the past two seasons, including Tommy John surgery and an oblique injury. Last year, he participated in eight rehab games within the Yankees’ system, achieving a 2.70 ERA in 16 2/3 innings pitched.
