A Detroit mother has been formally charged with murder and several other serious offenses following the tragic death of her 9-year-old son, whose remains were discovered buried in the backyard of their previous residence on Detroit’s west side.

The accused, identified as Brandee Pierce, appeared before a judge at the 36th District Court who ordered her to be held without the possibility of bail, as announced by the Wayne County prosecutor’s office.

The court has set a date for a probable cause conference on March 7, and a preliminary examination is slated for March 13. It remains unclear if Pierce has legal representation at this stage.

Pierce, aged 41, faces multiple charges including first-degree murder, felony murder, first-degree child abuse, evidence tampering, and concealing an individual’s death in connection with her son, Zemar King.

Authorities made the grim discovery of the young boy’s body on January 6. It was found by a landlord preparing the property for new occupants.

According to Prosecutor Kym Worthy, the investigation revealed that the child was suffocated on October 24. Pierce reportedly deserted their rented residence on November 6, subsequently relocating to Georgia with her 3-year-old child.

The situation came to light when police in Brookhaven, a suburb near Atlanta, contacted Detroit authorities in December during an unrelated investigation concerning the younger child. Following these events, Pierce was taken into custody on January 10 and later transferred from Georgia back to Michigan.

Prosecutor Worthy had issued a profound statement expressing her shock and dismay at the nature of the case when the charges were first announced. “The alleged actions of this defendant are among the most callous I have seen and hope never to see again,” she remarked, highlighting the severity of the accusations.
