BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — In an impressive performance, Shyanne Sellers surged in the fourth quarter to propel No. 19 Maryland to a 74-60 victory over Indiana on Thursday night. Sellers showcased her scoring prowess by contributing 21 of her 25 points during the final period. Her excellent shooting included three three-pointers, successful completion of five out of seven attempts, and a flawless eight-for-eight from the free-throw line, while Indiana only managed to score 21 points collectively in the fourth.
Despite Indiana being behind by ten points at halftime, Yarden Garzon’s three-pointer cut Maryland’s lead to 39-37 towards the end of the third quarter. However, Sellers responded with a key layup leading to a decisive 15-5 run, extending Maryland’s lead to 54-42 early in the fourth quarter. Although Indiana narrowed the gap to 61-55 with just over three minutes left, they couldn’t close in further.
Kaylene Smikle made a significant impact in the second quarter by scoring six of her 16 points, helping Maryland outscore Indiana 16-6 and securing a 30-20 lead by halftime. Smikle concluded the game with 16 points, while Christina Dalce added 11 for Maryland. The Terrapins, with a record of 22-6 overall and 12-5 in the Big Ten, have won three consecutive games and five of their last six. Allie Kubek also contributed with 11 rebounds alongside her six points. Sellers has been consistent, scoring in double figures in 22 out of 26 games this season.
On the Indiana side, Garzon led the team with 18 points, while Shay Ciezki added 15. The Hoosiers, holding a record of 17-11 overall and 9-8 in conference play, have faced challenges recently, losing two straight games and four of their last six.
As the regular season approaches its end, Maryland is set to host No. 12 Ohio State, while Indiana will visit Purdue on Sunday.
