MILAN — Designers and fashion enthusiasts gathered on Thursday for Milan Fashion Week, where Fausto Puglisi presented a captivating collection for Roberto Cavalli. Drawing inspiration from the ancient city of Pompeii, Puglisi delivered a show that took the audience on a remarkable journey through history.
The collection opened with a striking ensemble: a fiery devoré velvet piece that transitioned seamlessly into shimmering silver and gold. This dramatic transformation mirrored the catastrophic damage caused when Mount Vesuvius showered Pompeii with volcanic ash in 79 AD. The legendary floral frescoes of the city found a new life on elegant off-shoulder tunics and velvet minidresses, and some pieces were adorned with patterns mimicking faded marble.
Fausto Puglisi, the creative force behind the brand, expressed his deep admiration for the historic site. “I believe it is a magic place,” he stated. He saw beauty in the preservation of Pompeii, which allows modern audiences to appreciate the grandeur of the Roman Empire, even through the lens of destruction.
As the show progressed, silhouettes evolved to showcase a variety of looks. Daywear featured bold prints on denim and blouses, while more daring designs included seductive animal print slip dresses paired with matching faux fur. Flowing evening gowns captured attention with prints resembling molten lava, further echoing the volcanic theme.
Outerwear for the fall-winter season was luxurious and included opulent faux furs, a trend prominent on Milan’s runways this year. Black leather trenches, accented with smoky charcoal patterns, perhaps served as a nod to the enduring remnants of Pompeii’s ashes.
