KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has confirmed his intention to continue playing in the NFL next season, dismissing any thoughts of retirement.
At 35 years old, Kelce had been contemplating whether to embark on a 13th season in the league. However, in a message to Pat McAfee, which was shared during “The Pat McAfee Show” on Thursday, Kelce decisively expressed his commitment to returning.
“My dawg!!! I’m coming back for sure,” the accomplished All-Pro declared according to McAfee. “I’m aiming to get into the best shape of my life this offseason and make another run to the top. Ending the last game with a bad taste didn’t sit well with me, both in terms of my performance and how prepared the team was. I can’t hang up my cleats like that!!!!”
The Chiefs had been pursuing history with an unprecedented third consecutive Super Bowl victory but were stopped by a 40-22 defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles on February 9.
Despite contemplating retirement, Kelce had repeatedly expressed his passion for the game, particularly in the lead-up to the Super Bowl. He also mentioned on his podcast the possibility of taking some time to decide on his future in the sport.
Kelce’s choice to return isn’t unexpected, especially after Chiefs general manager Brett Veach commented at the NFL combine that he felt enthusiastic about Kelce’s willingness to keep playing following the end of the season.
Furthermore, Kelce’s current contract includes a significant $11.5 million roster bonus set to be paid by March 15. Veach assured that as the offseason progresses, the team operates under the assumption of Kelce’s ongoing presence.
