The San Francisco 49ers are kicking off negotiations with quarterback Brock Purdy for a potential long-term contract extension. As Purdy nears the expiration of his rookie deal, which he signed after being picked last in the 2022 NFL draft, the negotiations have become a focal point for the team this offseason.

49ers general manager John Lynch spoke about the progress at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, emphasizing the team’s interest in retaining Purdy. “We’ve initiated conversations,” Lynch reported. “We always keep details of these negotiations private, but I want Brock to remain our quarterback for as long as possible.”

Purdy has been a significant asset to the 49ers, earning less than $1 million annually over the first three years of his contract. He’s on track to receive a $5.2 million increase under the league’s performance escalator following his Pro Bowl selection last season. His performance, however, has exceeded this salary, leading to expectations that the new contract could surpass $50 million annually.

Despite a noticeable dip in performance this season from his fourth-place finish in the MVP race in 2023 due to injuries among key teammates, Purdy’s value to the team remains high. His passer rating fell to 96.1, with 20 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions, and he had challenges in late-game situations. Nevertheless, both the organization and Purdy are eager to continue their relationship.

Although Lynch notes there’s no certainty the contract extension will be finalized, he is optimistic about the motivation on both sides to reach an agreement.

In addition to discussing Purdy, Lynch provided updates on other significant matters:

Deebo Samuel has sought a trade following an underwhelming 2024 season. Lynch confirmed that the talented receiver wishes for a fresh start, with the 49ers facilitating discussions with other teams. After an exceptional 2021 season with 1,770 yards and 14 touchdowns, Samuel’s numbers have dwindled post-signing a $71.6 million extension. The receiver’s productivity was impacted by injuries, limiting him last season.

On the injury front, Lynch shared promising updates on Christian McCaffrey and Trent Williams. McCaffrey, sidelined since Week 13 due to a knee injury, is progressing well in his recovery and might join the offseason program. Williams, recovering from an ankle injury, is determined to return and remain a pivotal part of the team’s offense.

Finally, the 49ers announced a coaching change, with Mick Lombardi assuming the quarterbacks coach role following Brian Griese’s departure. Griese, influential in Purdy’s development, stepped down to prioritize family time, ending his three-year tenure with the 49ers.
