In Cape Town, South Africa, over 100 firefighters were engaged in tackling two raging fires on the slopes of the iconic Table Mountain on Wednesday. National park officials indicated they were making headway in controlling these blazes, which had posed a significant threat to nearby Cape Town.

The South African National Parks, responsible for overseeing the mountain, disclosed that 115 firefighters, assisted by four helicopters and two aircraft, were actively involved in firefighting efforts, resulting in “significant progress.” These fires have continued to burn since at least Sunday on the mountain, known for its flat top and view over Cape Town. Meanwhile, the city is hosting a meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors from G20 nations, which commenced on Wednesday and is set to continue through Thursday. Officials confirmed there is no risk to this assembly.

The region around Cape Town frequently experiences fires during its hot and arid summer season from December to April. During this time, powerful coastal winds often exacerbate the situation. In 2021, a fire on Table Mountain marked one of the worst incidents in recent memory; it destroyed historic buildings at the University of Cape Town and led to the evacuation of nearby areas.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in the latest occurrences, but authorities remain cautious. South African National Parks stated that firefighters would maintain their presence on Table Mountain overnight to prevent any potential resurgence of the fires, especially if the winds intensify.
