PARIS — In a bid to liven up the Monaco Grand Prix, where overtaking maneuvers on the narrow circuit are notoriously difficult, Formula 1 drivers will now be required to make a minimum of two pit stops during the race. This rule change has been implemented to introduce an element of unpredictability and excitement to an event that often hinges on qualifying results rather than on-track action.

The FIA, the governing authority for Formula 1, announced on Wednesday that drivers will need to use at least three different sets of tires throughout the race. This strategy aims to enhance the spectacle of the Grand Prix by adding a tactical layer, forcing teams to make strategic decisions during the race which could potentially alter the outcome. This adjustment attempts to address the overtaking challenges that have arisen with the increase in size and width of modern F1 cars.

Traditionally, the Monaco Grand Prix is determined by the results of the Saturday qualifying session. The narrow streets and tight corners of the circuit make passing extremely challenging, with the starting grid often reflecting the finishing order unless unexpected events occur.

The previous year’s Monaco Grand Prix saw early drama after first-lap incidents led to a red flag, which allowed drivers to change tires during a subsequent standing restart. Following this, Charles Leclerc managed to secure first place without additional pit stop challenges, underscoring the difficulty of overtaking in races since the competition lacked significant maneuvers after the restart.
