Severe weather conditions in Afghanistan have led to the deaths of 36 individuals and left 40 others injured, a spokesperson for the Taliban administration announced on Wednesday. The country has been experiencing heavy snowfall and rainfall over several days across numerous provinces, which, while aiding in drought conditions, has resulted in significant human and economic losses, according to Abdullah Jan Saiq from the National Disaster Management Authority.
Provincial reports indicate substantial casualties and damage, particularly in the southwestern region of Farah province. Saiq detailed that the harsh weather conditions have led to the complete destruction of 240 homes, with an additional 61 sustaining damage. Additionally, extensive damage has been caused to hundreds of acres of land across the affected areas.
In response to the crisis, Saiq mentioned that teams have been dispatched to the impacted regions to conduct surveys with the assistance of various nongovernmental organizations. The ongoing efforts aim to assess the full scope of the damage. Moreover, snow has blocked roads in several provinces, and collaborative work with the Ministry of Public Works is underway to clear these routes and facilitate access to affected areas.
