In Seoul, South Korea, Chung Mong-gyu has secured his fourth term as the president of the Korea Football Association with a decisive victory, despite recent public discontent and challenges from notable contenders. The election on Wednesday saw Chung triumph over Huh Jung-moo, who led the national team during the 2010 World Cup, and Shin Moon-sun, a former player and TV commentator. Chung received 156 out of 183 votes from regional officials, players, referees, and coaches.

Chung expressed his gratitude and sense of obligation following the election results, acknowledging the broad participation from all corners of the nation. He emphasized his commitment to fulfilling his promises and advancing the interests of the football community. “This massive involvement from football enthusiasts during the election was remarkable, and it strengthens my resolve to work diligently for the sport,” Chung stated. Having been a former FIFA Council member, Chung brings significant experience to his role.

Despite his sweeping success in the election, Chung faced scrutiny in recent years. Known for his ties to the Hyundai family, where he is a prominent figure in its real estate division, Chung’s decisions have been contentious. In February 2023, he was criticized for bypassing standard hiring procedures at the KFA to appoint Jurgen Klinsmann as head coach. The same year, his decision to pardon former players who were lifetime-banned for match-fixing drew public ire.

Chung, who first assumed the presidency in 2013, begins his new four-year term immediately and aims to steer the association toward a brighter future.
