In Sydney, the Matildas, Australia’s national women’s soccer team, have publicly condemned misogynistic remarks made by radio host Marty Sheargold. Following a series of offensive comments during his show on the Triple M radio network, Sheargold has been removed from the air. His diatribe came after the Matildas competed in the SheBelieves Cup, where they faced defeats against Japan and the United States. His statements trivialized the team by likening their dynamics to high school drama and questioned the relevance of women’s sports over men’s.
Sheargold’s comments drew immediate backlash on social media, with Rosie Malone, an Australian field hockey player, criticizing them as “disgusting” and “horrendous.” Malone highlighted the inappropriateness of such discourse being broadcasted in 2025, expressing concern for young girls who might have heard the denigrating remarks while journeying with family to sports practices.
Australian soccer players Alex Chidiac and Clare Wheeler took to Instagram to voice their disapproval of the commentary, with Chidiac expressing fatigue over such attitudes, and Wheeler reiterating that sports should be inclusive for all. Matildas captain, Steph Catley, condemned the comments as utterly unacceptable.
Football Federation Australia issued a statement stressing that the remarks undermine the accomplishments and societal contributions of the Matildas. The organization emphasized that the team has not only shattered glass ceilings within sports but has also acted as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring athletes nationwide. “The Matildas have catalyzed a profound shift in women’s sports throughout Australia,” the statement read, advocating that they be treated with earned respect and professionalism.
Australia’s sports minister, Anika Wells, joined the criticism, labeling the comments as “boorish, boring, wrong,” while the national players’ union underscored the necessity of challenging such ignorance. Professional Footballers Australia CEO, Beau Busch, categorized the remarks as grossly misogynistic and disrespectful, advocating against the denigration of women’s achievements in sports.
In response, the Triple M network has clarified that Sheargold’s views do not align with its values, subsequently removing his show from the schedule. A new program is expected soon. In his apology, Sheargold admitted the possibility of his comedy missing the mark and expressed regret over any offense caused by his comments about the Matildas.
