SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers have elevated Klay Kubiak to the position of offensive coordinator, filling a role that had been vacant for the last two seasons. He will also take over as the quarterbacks coach, a position previously held by Brian Griese.
Head Coach Kyle Shanahan revealed these adjustments, along with new additions to his coaching staff, during a recent announcement. This comes on the heels of hiring Robert Saleh as the defensive coordinator, succeeding Nick Sorensen, and appointing Brant Boyer to replace Brian Schneider as the special teams coach.
Shanahan had shared his plans to promote Kubiak at the conclusion of the last season. This role had remained unfilled since Mike McDaniel departed to become the head coach in Miami following the 2021 season. Ensuring compliance with the Rooney Rule, the team conducted interviews with at least two minority candidates before finalizing Kubiak’s advancement.
Kubiak, a name familiar in the NFL due to his father Gary Kubiak’s legacy, steps into his fifth year with the 49ers. He served as a passing game specialist last season and moves up the ranks under Shanahan, who got his first opportunity as both a position coach and coordinator in the NFL thanks to Gary Kubiak, during his tenure with the Houston Texans.
The coaching reshuffle also includes Mick Lombardi’s promotion from senior offensive assistant to quarterbacks coach. Lombardi steps into a role that Griese managed for three seasons, significantly contributing to the progress of quarterback Brock Purdy, who has since left the team.
Adding to the staff, Gus Bradley joins as assistant head coach overseeing defense. The team also welcomed Ray Brown as defensive backs and cornerbacks coach, Greg Scruggs as an assistant for the defensive line, and Colt Anderson in a special teams capacity.
Furthermore, Jake Lynch, son of General Manager John Lynch, was appointed as a defensive quality control coach after serving as a graduate assistant at the University of Washington in the previous season.
In other promotions, Chris Foerster has received the assistant head coach designation as an offensive line coach, while receivers coach Leonard Hankerson will now contribute as a passing game specialist.
