INDIANAPOLIS – The New York Jets are charting a course to victory in 2025 without the renowned quarterback Aaron Rodgers leading the way.
Newly appointed general manager Darren Mougey clarified on Tuesday that the team never set any ultimatums or conditions for Rodgers to return. Along with head coach Aaron Glenn, they concluded it was in the best interest of the team to proceed with a different quarterback at the helm.
“Aaron Rodgers, as both a player and a person, commands a lot of respect and is undoubtedly a first-ballot Hall of Famer,” Mougey expressed at the NFL scouting combine. “We wish him all the best, but ultimately this was a decision we made to move forward, focusing now on free agency and the draft.”
Nearly two weeks ago, the Jets communicated to the 41-year-old Rodgers that they would be heading in a new direction. Rodgers, a four-time MVP and one of only five players in NFL history to surpass 500 touchdown passes in regular games, still has a year remaining on a contract valued at $37.5 million, which is not guaranteed.
This decision did not sit well with everyone on the team, especially considering the Jets struggled last season with Rodgers, finishing with a 5-12 record. In reaction to the team’s announcement, three-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Quinnen Williams shared his disapproval by posting a thumbs-down emoji on social media.
Head coach Glenn acknowledged the reaction from Williams, stating that the choices he and Mougey make are always with the intent to win immediately. “I understand the emotions tied to these decisions,” Glenn commented. “There will be challenges, and not every decision will be popular, but it’s important to have open discussions and deal with them internally.”
Rodgers was acquired from Green Bay in April 2023, with hopes that he would help end the Jets’ long-standing Super Bowl drought dating back to Joe Namath’s era in 1968. Unfortunately, Rodgers’ season was cut short after only four plays due to a torn left Achilles tendon, which derailed the Jets’ aspirations once again. Although he started every game upon his return, inconsistent performances led to Coach Robert Saleh’s departure as the team struggled with a 2-3 start.
When questioned about wide receiver Davante Adams’ future with the Jets, Mougey provided limited information. Adams is under contract to earn $35.64 million annually over the next two years, posing the possibility of renegotiation or release in the coming months. Adams previously mentioned that Rodgers’ situation might influence his decisions regarding his future with the team.
Mougey simply stated, “He’s on the team now,” when addressing Adams’ status.
