Legendary Coach Joe Fusco of Westminster College Passes

    NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — The football community is mourning the loss of Joe Fusco, a prominent figure in college football history. Renowned for his success with Westminster College, Fusco passed away at the age of 87 in Farrell, Pennsylvania, as reported by the college on Monday. The specific cause of his death has not been disclosed.

    Fusco’s illustrious tenure at Westminster spanned from 1972 to 1990, during which he led the team to four NAIA Division II national championships. These victories came in 1976, 1977, 1988, and 1989, marking a period of remarkable achievement. Under his guidance, the Titans recorded an impressive streak, clinching victories in 21 out of 22 games across the 1976-77 seasons. Furthermore, they set a national record with a 27-game winning streak through the 1988-89 seasons.

    During his time at Westminster, Fusco secured a remarkable coaching record of 154 wins, 34 losses, and 3 ties, boasting a winning percentage of .814. His achievements earned him recognition as one of the 150 greatest coaches in college football history by ESPN in 2019. His exemplary career was further honored with induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

    Originally from Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, Fusco’s journey in football began as a lineman at Westminster from 1957 to 1959. Prior to his significant impact as head coach, he gained experience as a high school coach before returning to Westminster in 1968 as an offensive line coach, eventually becoming a key figure in the program’s success.
