WASHINGTON — Authorities in Washington, D.C. are looking into assault claims involving Florida Republican Congressman Cory Mills. However, an official says the case has been returned for more investigation and may not lead to any charges.
Local police responded to a call regarding an alleged assault on Wednesday afternoon in Washington’s Wharf neighborhood. The police report indicates the allegation involved a female victim and that no weapon was involved. No arrests occurred, but authorities labeled the case as an “active criminal investigation.”
Mills’ office released a statement acknowledging that law enforcement was involved in addressing a personal matter at the congressman’s residence. The statement stressed that Congressman Mills denies any misconduct and believes the investigation will quickly clear up the situation.
A law enforcement official, expressing the need for anonymity given the nature of the ongoing investigation, indicated that the case has been referred back to the police. This official suggested that the case may not advance to any formal charges.
The situation has sparked an internal review within the Metro Police Department (MPD) regarding the initial management of the complaint. In a department statement, it was noted that leadership promptly evaluated the response to ensure all procedures were adhered to. The incident is currently under investigation by MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau.
Mayor Muriel Bowser, when addressing the press on Friday, refrained from directly acknowledging Mills’ involvement. She did, however, comment on the internal investigation, emphasizing the importance of verifying that department members acted in accordance with MPD guidelines.
Mills, a decorated Army veteran honored with a Bronze Star for his service in Iraq, secured re-election to his congressional seat last year.
