ATHENS, Greece — Authorities have reported a deadly shooting incident in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, resulting in the death of a Turkish national and the injury of another individual on Tuesday.
According to details provided by the survivor, the victims were traveling in a car near Thessaloniki’s long-distance bus terminal at approximately 1 p.m. local time (1100 GMT) when their vehicle was suddenly blocked by another car. An attacker from the other vehicle opened fire, police revealed.
The driver, wounded from the attack, was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment, while the passenger succumbed to injuries and died. Responding officers found nine bullet casings in the vicinity of the shooting scene.
The identities of the victims have not been disclosed, but authorities confirmed that both individuals had been residing legally in Greece for about two years. The incident is currently under investigation by the police’s organized crime unit.
Though incidents of gun violence are infrequent in Greece, the country does experience activity from organized crime networks. In recent years, several shootings have been linked to Turkish criminal organizations. Notably, a significant incident took place in September 2023 in a seaside town near Athens, where six Turks were fatally ambushed in their vehicle.
