SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Early Tuesday, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake jolted the northeast region of the Dominican Republic, startling residents awake but resulting in no reported damage. Fortunately, neither a tsunami alert was necessary following the quake.
According to data from the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was pinpointed roughly 60 miles (100 kilometers) north-northeast of the popular tourist destination of Punta Cana. The seismic event originated at a depth of about 29 miles (46 kilometers) beneath the surface.
Residents in parts of the Dominican Republic reported feeling ground tremors, as did those in neighboring Puerto Rico, emphasizing the quake’s reach. Despite the tremor’s magnitude and widespread sensation, authorities quickly confirmed that no significant damage had occurred, offering reassurance to the populace.
