The University of Utah has made a significant change in leadership for its men’s basketball team by dismissing head coach Craig Smith. This decision was announced following the team’s 76-72 defeat to Central Florida, which left the Utes with a current record of 15-12 for the season.

Craig Smith, who was overseeing his fourth season with the team, ended his tenure with a record of 65 wins and 62 losses. In the interim period, assistant coach Josh Eilert will step in to guide the team while the university conducts a comprehensive national search for a new head coach.

This season, the Utes have had a somewhat challenging time competing within the Big 12 Conference, with a current conference record of 7-9. Last season, the team found success by reaching the semifinals of the National Invitation Tournament when they were still part of the Pac-12 Conference.

Athletic Director Mark Harlan expressed gratitude for Smith’s contributions, highlighting the high points and memorable victories he achieved with the team. However, Harlan underscored that the university is aiming for greater achievements in its men’s basketball program, justifying the decision for new leadership.
