BEIJING — In a recent conversation, China’s President Xi Jinping expressed his approval of Russia’s initiatives to facilitate a summit with the United States aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as reported by state media.
During the call, Russian President Vladimir Putin provided an update to Xi regarding recent communications with the U.S., although detailed information on those discussions was not disclosed.
Xi acknowledged the positive steps taken by Russia and other involved parties towards addressing the crisis, reinforcing China’s supportive stance on any dialogue involving Russia and the U.S. The Kremlin stated that China is ready to contribute to efforts for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
This discussion coincided with a significant visit from numerous European and Canadian leaders to Ukraine’s capital, which marked the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, highlighting their commitment to supporting Ukraine during this critical period.
Additionally, Xi reiterated China’s position on peace initiatives, which includes participation in a “Friends of Peace” coalition formed last September with several other nations to foster efforts aimed at ending the war. Last year, China, alongside Brazil, introduced a peace plan advocating for a conference involving both Ukraine and Russia, emphasizing the importance of avoiding further escalation of the conflict.
Moreover, the camaraderie between Xi and Putin has resulted in strengthened ties between their nations. China has increasingly become a significant purchaser of Russian oil and gas, as well as a supplier of crucial technologies in light of the extensive sanctions imposed on Russia by Western countries.
