CARSON, Calif. — San Diego FC made an impressive entry into Major League Soccer with a 2-0 victory over defending champions LA Galaxy, marked by a standout performance from Anders Dreyer, who netted both goals during the match. This was a significant moment for many of the players, marking their first match in the league. “It’s great to start the club on a high note,” Dreyer expressed, eager for more success as the team prepares for their next game.
Dreyer, a 26-year-old midfielder hailing from Denmark, joined San Diego FC from Belgian club Anderlecht, and he showcased his abilities by scoring in the 52nd and 93rd minutes. Hirving “Chucky” Lozano, who was the team’s first major signing last June, assisted Dreyer’s initial goal. Lozano, with experience from two World Cups representing Mexico, transitioned from PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands earlier in the year.
As the tenth franchise to join MLS since 2017, San Diego FC became only the third team to win its inaugural match, following in the footsteps of Los Angeles FC and St. Louis City, both of which achieved similar victories. Lozano shared insights on the match, noting, “Playing against the champions was a tough challenge given the Galaxy’s talented roster. We demonstrated our preparation today.”
The first goal came about when Galaxy defender Emiro Garcés mishandled a pass from goalkeeper Novak Micovic inside the box, allowing Lozano to intercept the ball and set up Dreyer’s precise shot. Dreyer capped off the victory with a powerful left-footed strike into the upper corner after receiving a pass from teammate Tomás Ángel. Goalkeeper CJ dos Santos contributed to the triumph by making three crucial saves to maintain a clean sheet.
Coach Mikey Varas emphasized the team’s commitment to winning from the outset. “From day one, we established our intent and the standards we aim to meet. This match serves as a stepping stone towards our goals,” he stated, commenting on the celebration of their success and the need for focus as they prepare for future games.
For LA Galaxy, the match represented a setback, especially as they sought to maintain their strong home record. Miguel Berry had a promising chance in the 79th minute, but dos Santos was equal to the task. This defeat marked the Galaxy’s first loss at Dignity Health Park since last season’s finale. The six-time MLS Cup champions were without key players, including forward Joseph Paintsil due to a quadriceps injury and midfielder Riqui Puig, who is not expected back until the summer due to knee issues. Micovic recorded four saves in his efforts to defend the goal.
Coach Greg Vanney expressed concern regarding his team’s cohesion, saying, “We appeared a bit disorganized. It didn’t feel like a championship-winning side; we looked like a team still trying to find its rhythm.”
As San Diego FC gears up for their inaugural home game against St. Louis, MLS Commissioner Don Garber acknowledged the enthusiastic support from fans who traveled to the match. “Establishing San Diego in the league has been a long-time goal for us,” Garber said. “It’s essential that we continually work on improving and ensure things come together effectively when we welcome a new franchise.”
