Sweden probes into a cable disruption in the Baltic Sea.

STOCKHOLM — Swedish officials are currently looking into a damaged cable that was located in the Baltic Sea, according to media reports from TT.

This latest incident adds to a troubling pattern of damaged undersea cables in the area, which has raised concerns about potential sabotage and espionage, particularly attributed to Russian activities in the region.

Recently, a similar issue arose when authorities identified damage on an undersea fiber-optic cable connecting the Latvian port city of Ventspils with Gotland in Sweden. A Bulgarian shipping vessel was briefly confiscated in relation to the investigation but was subsequently released after prosecutors dismissed initial allegations of sabotage as the cause of the damage.

The latest cable break was reported close to Gotland, to the south of Stockholm, situated within Sweden’s economic territory. The cable in question connects Germany and Finland.

To address the situation, the Swedish Coast Guard is responding to the location of the incident. Both the Coast Guard and local prosecutors have redirected media inquiries to the police, who have not yet provided any comments on the evolving situation.

On social media platform X, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasized the government’s serious approach toward all incidents involving infrastructure damage in the Baltic Sea.

As of now, no further specifics regarding the incident have been disclosed.
