The standout player of the week for women’s college basketball in Week 15 has been Mikayla Blakes from Vanderbilt.
The freshman guard made headlines by breaking the NCAA freshman single-game scoring record, achieving a remarkable 55 points in a game against Auburn.
This accomplishment places her ninth on the all-time NCAA scoring list for a single game and makes her one of only two players, alongside Patricia Hoskins from Mississippi Valley State, to have scored 53 points or more in two games during the same season.
Over the course of two games, Blakes maintained an average of 34.5 points while shooting an impressive 63.6% from the floor.
Notably, she was exceptional at the free-throw line, converting on 23 of 24 attempts during her record-breaking performance.
In the runner-up position is JuJu Watkins from USC.
The sophomore guard displayed her skills by racking up 38 points, along with 11 rebounds, eight blocks, and five assists, leading her team to a surprising victory over top-ranked UCLA.
Her eight blocks not only marked a career high but also tied for the third-most blocks recorded in a game by any player in USC’s history.
Watkins has now climbed to the 13th spot on USC’s all-time scoring list with 1,507 career points, and this victory over UCLA marked USC’s first win against a top-ranked opponent since 1983.
Several players also received honorable mentions this week, including Katie Dinnebier from Drake, Azzi Fudd from UConn, and Reniya Kelly from North Carolina.
Additionally, keep an eye on Taleyah Jones, a junior guard from Oral Roberts, who averaged 29 points during her team’s wins against Omaha and Kansas City.
Under her leadership, the team achieved back-to-back wins scoring over 100 points, a feat not accomplished in league play since the 2010-11 season.
Jones contributed 30 points against Omaha and followed it up with 28 against Kansas City.
