WELLINGTON, New Zealand — New Zealand’s cricket team is facing another challenge as they prepare for the International Cricket Council’s Champions Trophy in Pakistan, with the recent injury of fast bowler Lockie Ferguson due to a foot injury.

Ferguson sustained the injury during a warm-up game against Afghanistan on Sunday and will be returning home right away. His position in the squad has been filled by Kyle Jamieson, who last played in a one-day international in September 2023.

This loss comes on the heels of another setback, as fellow fast bowler Ben Sears is also sidelined with a hamstring issue.

Coach Gary Stead expressed his disappointment regarding Ferguson’s injury, noting, “We’re really disappointed for Lockie. He is an integral member of our bowling unit and offers significant experience in major tournaments. We understand how eager he was to represent New Zealand once again at such a prestigious event.”

Stead conveyed his best wishes for Ferguson’s recovery, hoping for a swift return to form.

As for Jamieson, Stead believes he possesses qualities that will enable him to step up in Ferguson’s absence. “Kyle has an abundance of pace and provides extra bounce, which will be advantageous in the conditions we are facing in Pakistan,” Stead stated. “He has demonstrated his effectiveness in the shorter formats of the game during his return to domestic cricket, consistently bowling with considerable pace and energy—qualities that are essential.”

New Zealand’s first match in the Champions Trophy will be against the host nation, Pakistan, on Wednesday.
