GLENDALE, Ariz. — On Monday, the Chicago White Sox announced they have claimed pitcher Owen White off waivers from the New York Yankees, marking yet another chapter in the young athlete’s career.
White, who was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the second round of the 2018 amateur draft, has faced challenges at the professional level. Over the last two years, he appeared in five games for the Rangers, finishing with an 0-1 record and a lofty 16.71 ERA.
Chicago’s manager, Will Venable, is well-acquainted with White from their shared time in Texas. Prior to his hiring by the White Sox in October, Venable served as an associate manager with the Rangers. Venable expressed enthusiasm about White’s potential contributions to the team, noting, “He’s got a bunch of different pitches in his arsenal. He’s really a good kid and has versatility. He can start, and in Texas, he came out of the bullpen. So, I’m really excited that we got Owen.”
The 25-year-old pitcher was traded to the Cincinnati Reds on January 6th for cash considerations. Subsequently, on January 29, he was designated for assignment by Cincinnati before being claimed by the Yankees on February 5. However, after being designated again last week, his journey led him to the White Sox.
To accommodate White on their 40-man roster, the White Sox placed left-handed pitcher Ky Bush on the 60-day injured list. Bush recently underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday. He, along with catcher Edgar Quero, was obtained by Chicago in July 2023 when the team traded pitchers Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo López to the Los Angeles Angels.
As the season progresses, the White Sox will be watching to see how White adjusts to his new team and the potential impact he may have amidst the changes in their roster.
