
MEXICO CITY — Renowned Mexican artist Paquita la del Barrio, celebrated for her striking voice and unwavering advocacy for women’s rights, passed away at her residence in Veracruz early Monday. She was 77 years old.
The announcement of her death was shared on her official social media accounts and was further confirmed by her representatives. The city of Veracruz is set to grieve the loss of this iconic figure, who had encountered various health challenges in recent times.
A heartfelt statement released from her team expressed, “With deep pain and sadness, we confirm the sensitive passing of our beloved ‘Paquita la del Barrio’ at her home in Veracruz. She was a unique and unrepeatable artist who will leave an indelible mark in the hearts of all who knew her and enjoyed her music.”
Born Francisca Viveros Barradas, Paquita la del Barrio enchanted her fans with poignant songs that depicted themes of heartbreak and betrayal. Many of her most renowned tracks, such as “Rata de dos patas” and “Tres veces te engañé,” became anthems for her predominantly female audience, although her dynamic performances also attracted male fans.
Reflecting on her experience, Paquita noted in a 2016 interview, “At the beginning, many men said ‘Why would I go, to get shamed? … Now they join the concerts. They go with their girlfriend, their wife, and they love it.”
A recipient of two Grammy nominations and two Latin Grammy nominations, Paquita la del Barrio garnered substantial recognition from the music industry, which included receiving the Billboard Latin Music Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2021. This accolade was presented to her by the famous Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny.
