NEW YORK — This weekend, former Vice President Kamala Harris will be honored with the NAACP’s prestigious Chairman’s Award at the organization’s annual Image Awards ceremony.

Harris, who faced Donald Trump in the presidential race last year, made history as the first female and first person of color to hold the vice-presidential office. Before her term as vice president, she served as a U.S. senator representing California and as the attorney general of the state.

In a statement released on Monday, Leon W. Russell, the chair of the NAACP’s national board of directors, expressed admiration for Harris, saying, “Vice President Kamala Harris is more than a leader — she is a force of change, driven by an unwavering passion to shape a brighter, more equitable future. It is with great honor that we present her with the Chairman’s Award at this year’s NAACP Image Awards, celebrating her relentless dedication to justice, equality, and the betterment of our society.”

Previous recipients of the Chairman’s Award include notable figures such as former President Barack Obama, the late Representative John Lewis, and the celebrated actress Ruby Dee.

The NAACP Image Awards, which are co-hosted by the NAACP and BET, will be held on Saturday at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California. The ceremony will feature a range of categories, including entertainer of the year, best movie, and outstanding work in poetry.
