MESA, Arizona — Manager Mark Kotsay has secured his position with the Athletics through a contract extension that runs until the end of the 2028 season, which also includes an option for 2029.
The announcement was made on Monday, coinciding with the beginning of the team’s first full-squad workout for the spring training.
At 49 years old, Kotsay is entering his fourth season with the Athletics, guiding the team through a challenging transition marked by a relocation from Oakland to Sacramento, California. For the immediate future, the team will be playing at a minor league facility as they work towards establishing themselves in Las Vegas.
Last season, the Athletics posted a record of 69 wins and 93 losses, marking a significant improvement of 19 wins compared to the challenging previous season, where they lost 112 games in 2023. The team appears to be on an upward trajectory with a promising roster that features young talents such as Brent Rooker, Shea Langeliers, Lawrence Butler, and JJ Bleday.
In the offseason, Rooker finalized a notable five-year contract worth $60 million with the Athletics, while right-handed pitcher Luis Severino signed a three-year deal for $67 million. These moves indicate that the traditionally budget-conscious franchise is now willing to invest in talent as they strive to remain competitive in the AL West.
Initially, Kotsay’s agreement was a three-year deal covering the years 2022 to 2024, which was extended in November 2023 when the team opted to secure his services through 2025. With this recent extension, Kotsay can now enjoy increased job security as the team transitions to its new home in Sacramento.
