CORAL GABLES, Fla. — In a thrilling matchup, Makayla Timpson’s layup with just three seconds remaining secured a narrow 83-82 victory for the 23rd-ranked Florida State Seminoles over the Miami Hurricanes on Sunday.
With this win, Florida State improved its record to 20-6 overall and 10-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), breaking a two-game losing streak that had them trailing behind Louisville and North Carolina, both teams tied for fourth place in the conference. Conversely, Miami’s record dropped to 13-12, with a disappointing 3-11 in the conference, marking their fourth consecutive defeat against ranked opponents.
The game took a dramatic turn in the final minutes. Miami briefly held a 78-76 advantage after Haley Cavinder converted a layup with 1:25 left on the clock. However, a foul by Cavinder on O’Mariah Gordon allowed Gordon to step to the line, where she successfully made two free throws to tie the game. Natalija Marshall then gave Miami a temporary lead with a layup just 18 seconds before the end, but Florida State quickly responded. Gordon drained a jumper, converted the free throw following a foul, and pushed the Seminoles ahead, 81-80. A last foul by Gordon on Cavinder allowed Miami another opportunity, and Cavinder made both free throws to regain a fleeting lead, but just seconds later, Timpson’s clutch basket sealed the game for Florida State.
Gordon was outstanding for Florida State, scoring a career-high 34 points by connecting on 14 of 22 attempts from the floor and also contributing seven assists. Timpson added to the win with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Sydney Bowles pitched in 14 points. The Seminoles finished the game with an impressive shooting percentage of 50.8%, hitting 33 of their 65 attempts.
On the other side, Cavinder had a commendable outing for Miami, netting 27 points while hitting 4 of 8 from three-point range. She also registered eight rebounds and seven assists. Jasmyne Roberts scored 16 points, Marshall contributed 15, and Cameron Williams added 12 points for the Hurricanes, who managed a 53.4% shooting performance, making 31 of 58 attempts.
Looking ahead, Florida State will host the Pittsburgh Panthers on Thursday before facing a challenging finish to the regular season with three consecutive games against ranked teams: Georgia Tech (No. 19), Notre Dame (No. 2), and Duke (No. 13). Meanwhile, the Hurricanes are set to welcome Notre Dame on Thursday as well.
