DALLAS — On Sunday, the Dallas Mavericks announced that they have suspended an unidentified employee following the arrest of assistant coach Darrell Armstrong, who faces a charge of aggravated assault involving a deadly weapon.

According to the Dallas police, officers were dispatched in the early hours of Saturday after receiving a call about a disturbance. Investigators stated that a preliminary inquiry revealed an altercation between the 56-year-old Armstrong and the victim, during which he allegedly struck her with a firearm and made threats to shoot her. Reports indicate that the two individuals were previously acquainted.

Local news outlet WFAA disclosed, citing anonymous law enforcement sources, that the victim involved is a woman. Following his booking on Saturday morning, Armstrong reportedly posted bond.

Larry Taylor, an attorney representing Armstrong, mentioned in a statement that his legal team is in the initial phases of reviewing the details of the situation. He added, “We will provide further updates regarding this matter in the coming days.”

The Mavericks released a statement confirming their awareness of the incident and that they are in the process of gathering relevant information. A representative from the NBA indicated that the league is also in touch with the Mavericks as they continue to collect details about the situation.

The team mentioned, “The employee has been placed on administrative suspension pending the outcome of legal proceedings. This matter is currently under review by the appropriate legal authorities. Consequently, we will allow the legal process to proceed and will refrain from further comment while these proceedings are ongoing.”

Armstrong previously played two seasons with the Mavericks towards the end of his 14-year NBA career and served as a backup point guard on the team that reached the NBA Finals in 2006, ultimately losing to the Miami Heat. He has been part of the Dallas coaching staff since the 2008-09 season.
