BOSTON — Grant Fisher set a new world indoor record for the 5,000 meters on Friday at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational, accomplishing this remarkable feat just a week after breaking another world record.
Fisher completed the race in an impressive time of 12 minutes, 44.09 seconds, surpassing the previous record of 12:49.59 established by Ethiopian athlete Kenenisa Bekele back on February 20, 2004, by a substantial 5.51 seconds.
Just last Saturday, during the Millrose Games, Fisher had already made headlines by breaking the world indoor record for the 3,000 meters with a time of 7:22.91, which bested the previous record of 7:23.81 held by Lamecha Girma of Ethiopia for two years.
The past few days have seen a flurry of world record-breaking performances. Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen also made waves by breaking the world record in the indoor mile on Thursday, managing to outdo Yared Nuguse’s recently set record from the Millrose Games just a few days earlier. Ingebrigtsen completed the mile in a swift time of 3:45.14, improving Nuggets’ hard-fought record of 3:46.63 from New York.
Ingebrigtsen, an accomplished two-time Olympic champion, wasn’t done yet; he further distinguished himself by redefining the world indoor record for the 1,500 meters during the competition held in northern France, clocking in at 3:29.63 to break his own previous record established on the same track in 2022.
It is important to note that the new world records achieved by Fisher and Ingebrigtsen are awaiting verification by World Athletics.
