MOSCOW, Russia — Russian authorities have arrested another American citizen after customs officials discovered cannabis-infused marmalade in his luggage, as reported by local media on Friday. This incident comes just days after a recent prisoner swap between Moscow and Washington, which the White House described as a potential diplomatic improvement and a move toward de-escalation in Ukraine.

According to Russian police, the 28-year-old American was accused of trying to smuggle in a “substantial quantity” of illicit drugs, as cited by the Interfax news agency, which referenced information from Russia’s Federal Customs Service. The individual was apprehended at Vnukovo airport in Moscow after arriving from Istanbul last Friday.

A Russian Telegram channel named Mash, associated with the security services, stated that the American, referred to only as K. Byers, could face a prison sentence of up to seven years if found guilty.

As of now, there has been no immediate response from the U.S. State Department regarding this latest incident.

Earlier this month, a notable prisoner exchange occurred between the U.S. and Russia, in which Alexander Vinnik—a Russian national who faced Bitcoin fraud allegations in the United States—was returned to Russia. This exchange was facilitated by the release of American Marc Fogel, a teacher from Pennsylvania who was detained in 2021 while traveling to Russia for a teaching position.

Fogel was serving a lengthy 14-year prison sentence after being caught with what his family and advocates claimed was marijuana prescribed for medical use. In December, the Biden administration classified his situation as wrongful detention.

Additionally, President Donald Trump made headlines on Wednesday by altering three years of U.S. policy regarding Ukraine, stating that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to initiate discussions aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict following an extended direct phone conversation.
