LEVERKUSEN, Germany — How does one follow up a remarkable upset? This is the challenge presented to Xabi Alonso and Bayer Leverkusen as they aim to establish themselves among Europe’s elite football clubs after dethroning Bayern Munich’s dominance in the Bundesliga last season, which had lasted for 11 years.
Leverkusen has retained nearly all the key players responsible for achieving an unbeaten Bundesliga season last year, securing the German Cup, and coming close to winning the Europa League. Nonetheless, the club grapples with ongoing speculation regarding the future of pivotal figures, including coach Alonso and star Florian Wirtz.
In discussing their ambitions, Alonso emphasized the goal of establishing sustainable success. “What we achieved last year was quite unique, so we wanted to ensure that our success could be sustainable,” he stated on Friday.
The upcoming match on Saturday poses a significant test for the team as they face off against Bayern Munich, now managed by Vincent Kompany, who currently leads Leverkusen by eight points. Alonso downplayed the match’s importance by calling it “not a final,” but acknowledged that a victory for Bayern could severely hinder Leverkusen’s title defense.
Alonso noted the notable difference between Kompany’s current Bayern and the team coached by Thomas Tuchel, which Leverkusen defeated 3-0 last season. “They are a different Bayern,” Alonso remarked, pointing out their ability to dominate games with ease and the exceptional quality of players like Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Jamal Musiala.
With an unbeaten record against Bayern as a coach in five matches, including a recent cup victory, Alonso has showcased his knack for tactical surprises.
What does sustainable success entail for Bayer Leverkusen? According to chief executive Fernando Carro, consistently finishing in the Bundesliga’s top four, qualifying for the Champions League, and reaching the knockout rounds are achievable goals. He candidly acknowledged the challenges of competing with Bayern Munich, which boasts significantly greater resources. “Being realistic is essential for us,” Carro remarked on Friday. “We aspire to challenge for titles each year, but fluctuation is inevitable. By sustainable, we mean securing a top-four finish.”
In a sport where smaller clubs often see their successful squads dismantled by richer teams, Leverkusen has managed to keep the foundation of Alonso’s squad intact. This includes key players like Wirtz and wing-back Jeremie Frimpong, as well as Alonso himself. The coach, who opted to remain with Leverkusen despite interest from Bayern and Liverpool, expressed his emotional attachment to the club and its supporters. “The team, the club, and the atmosphere contribute to this special energy and commitment,” he said.
Leverkusen’s managing director for sport, Simon Rolfes, emphasizes the importance of setting fresh targets to maintain competitive spirit. “Creating an ambitious environment is crucial for our talented players,” he explained. Rolfes also indicated that existing players help attract new talent, citing that Wirtz’s decision to join was influenced by the opportunity to learn from Kai Havertz, who transferred to Chelsea for a hefty fee in 2020. He further noted that now Wirtz plays a role in enticing other potential signings.
“People said that if Kai Havertz was to leave, we would struggle,” Rolfes remarked. “We turned that narrative into motivation to elevate the club.”
