BERLIN — James Sands, a defensive midfielder from the United States, is aiming to secure a spot on the World Cup roster next year following his mid-season move to Bundesliga club St. Pauli.
The 24-year-old, who is on loan from New York City FC, has been active in six league games since he joined St. Pauli in January. His continuous presence on the field for the entirety of the last three matches implies that he has quickly found his place within the team under the guidance of coach Alexander Blessin.
After being promoted as last season’s second division champions, St. Pauli’s primary target this year is to maintain their position in the Bundesliga. Sands was among four new additions to the squad during the winter transfer window. His four starts with the team have already contributed to two victories and a draw, showing a positive impact on the club’s performance.
Sands expressed his gratitude for the rapid integration he has experienced, emphasizing the supportive environment fostered by both his teammates and coaching staff. “It’s a very good group here. We’re really building in the right direction,” he remarked during a recent online press conference.
As the first professional player from New York City FC’s academy, Sands has accrued 13 caps for the U.S. national team. He was part of the squad that claimed the 2021 Gold Cup, having made his international debut in the tournament’s initial match against Haiti and maintaining a starting role for every subsequent game.
However, since the U.S. lost to Panama in the semifinals of the Gold Cup in July 2023, Sands has not featured for the national team, intensifying his desire to rejoin the fold. “Being a part of the World Cup team next year would be an amazing achievement,” he stated, acknowledging that while selection is ultimately not in his hands, he believes consistent performances at the club level could reinstate him in the national team conversation.
Competing for a spot in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, Sands recognizes the formidable talent pool he faces. “There are a lot of talented players and a lot of them are playing in Europe. So I knew to have a realistic chance at the team, I would have to be competing at a very high level in Europe,” he noted.
In addition to his role as a midfielder, Sands has the versatility to slot into central defense, a position he excelled in during New York City FC’s MLS Cup triumph in 2021. His previous loan to Rangers in January 2023 has bolstered his confidence, as he believes the diverse experience will serve him well in Germany. Although he clarified that the tactical approach differs—Rangers often dominate possession while St. Pauli typically utilizes counterattacks—he sees value in the variety of playing styles.
Currently, St. Pauli holds the 14th position in the 18-team league and is set to host Freiburg this upcoming Saturday, as they continue their campaign in the Bundesliga.
