LAS CRUCES, N.M. — In a thrilling matchup on Thursday night, Taelon Peter made a significant impact off the bench, scoring 20 points and leading Liberty to a 64-54 win over New Mexico State.
Peter was instrumental not only in scoring but also contributed six rebounds, showcasing his all-around game. For the Flames, who now hold a record of 20 wins and 5 losses, with 8 wins and 4 losses in Conference USA play, Owen Aquino also made a mark by scoring 11 points while maintaining a perfect shooting record—2 for 2 from the field and 6 for 6 from the free-throw line. Kaden Metheny added nine points to the scoreboard, despite his shooting struggles—he finished 4 of 14 from the field and just 1 of 7 on three-point attempts.
On the other side of the court, the Aggies (12-12 overall, 5-6 in conference) were headlined by Zawdie Jackson, who led his team with 18 points. Christian Cook contributed 11 points and made two steals for New Mexico State, while Carl Cherenfant added seven points to the team’s efforts.
The first half saw Metheny scoring five points, but Liberty found themselves trailing at halftime with a score of 29-24. However, Peter turned the tide in the second half, dominating with 17 points, which propelled Liberty to secure their 10-point victory by the final buzzer.
Both teams are looking ahead to their next games scheduled for Saturday. Liberty is set to visit UTEP, while New Mexico State will compete against Florida International at home.
